101 Offshore Oil Jobs offers an employment guide for offshore oil rig jobs,
how to recognize job scams, and offshore industry outlook.

How to avoid overseas job scams

You'll find much more in the Offshore Employment Kit (see below) specifically about oil industry job scams, but here's a bit of what's included:

According to the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, you can protect yourself against overseas employment scams by using common sense, and by following a few basic rules.

1. You should ask for references.

2. Check them out in the state they list as an address.

3. Get everything in writing.

4. Forget about companies with no legitimate street address.

5. Be very skeptical of overseas employment opportunities that sound "too good to be true."

6. Never send cash in the mail, and be extremely cautious with firms that require a money order. This could indicate that the firm is attempting to avoid a traceable record of its transactions.

7. Do not be fooled by official-sounding names. Many scam artists operate under names that sound like those of long-standing, reputable firms.

8. Avoid working with firms that require payment in advance.

9. Do not give your credit card or bank account number to telephone solicitors.

10. Read the contract very carefully. Have an attorney look over any documents you are asked to sign.

11. Beware of an agency that is unwilling to give you a written contract.

12. Do not hesitate to ask questions. You have a right to know what services to expect and the costs involved.

13. Do not make a hasty decision. Instead, take time to weigh all the pros and cons of the situation. Be wary of demands that "you must act now."

14. Keep a copy of all agreements you sign, as well as copies of checks you forward to the company.

CASE THREE: This is an actual case from the files of the Federal Trade Commission. Two more are included in the Kit, plus detailed information about who is trying to scam people looking for oil jobs.

(For legal reasons, we have excluded the actual names here):

A federal district court has prohibited Company C of Coral Springs, Florida, from falsely promising that it had found jobs for individuals, was hiring workers on behalf of other firms, or that it would fully refund deposits applicants had paid to hold purported jobs. The court order followed earlier Federal Trade Commission charges that the company had engaged in a deceptive scheme offering jobs in the Caribbean. The order also applies to company directors ABC, also known as XYZ, and also known as OPQ.

The court order stemmed from an FTC lawsuit filed in the court. The FTC alleged that Company C placed help-wanted ads in newspapers throughout the United States inviting job seekers to call an 800 telephone number for information about construction employment featuring high pay -- $70,000 to $85,000 a year -- and good benefits.

According to the FTC complaint detailing the charges, the defendants charged job seekers $289 each as a "refundable good faith" deposit for placement in a "guaranteed" position. In fact, the FTC charged, applicants received neither the promised jobs nor refunds of their deposits. Company C was not hiring for construction jobs with any firm in the Caribbean area, nor had the defendants reserved any construction jobs for the applications, the FTC charged.

and there's still more...

First, though, you should know who has put together this kit. As you''ll discover, Ralph Vaden has been there and done that:
Vaden is a semi- retired Offshore Paramedic (rig medic) who has worked in almost all continents of the world during his career. Now living in his native Florida in a small Gulf Coast town, he writes extensively and still takes jobs offshore...

He had the priviledge of being the first American fully trained EMS Paramedic to work in West Africa for a major drilling contractor there.

During his career he has worked assignments aboard Drilling Rigs, Offshore Platforms as well as seismic research vessels.

During this time he has made many friends in the industry worldwide and is as "connected" as any one man can be in the industry......"this guy knows everybody!"

An avid writer, he composed the "Offshore Employment Kit" during idle time at sea on a lengthy hitch. He had been instrumental in obtaining jobs in the oilfield for several friends and aquaintances on several occasions and finally decided to write down his contact information for future use.

What others have said about the our kit...

"Money well spent..." I have received your kit.  It is the best one yet.  Thank Capt Ron from Offshore Guides, he was the one that guided me to your site.  I have been interested in the offshore industry for over a year now, and have been very cautious in spending money on research.  Yours has been quite informative.  I have already spent a few hours researching your contact list.  It would have taken me well over a week solid time on the internet to get the same information.  Thank you, my money has been well spent.

"Here's a great example of a good, simple yet effective site... Vaden, a semi- retired offshore paramedic who has worked all over the world, has a lot of good information about what offshore is all about, and offers an Offshore Employment Kit. I bought it myself and found some great information in it. The Kit contains contact information for companies, which you would spend 25 hours plus in search time to get the same results."

Captain Ron Edwards
OffshoreGuides.com

If you’ve been to Offshore Guides (and you should visit it) you know Captain Edwards is the real deal. He isn’t about to recommend something that won’t work.

Since he wrote these comments, the Offshore Employment Kit has more than doubled in size, so you're going to save even more search time.

But not only did Captain Ron appreciate the kit, he helped in the latest revision by writing a special bonus report just for you, to help you with one of the most difficult parts of finding offshore oil jobs.

You’ll get a special bonus report called
Insider Secrets of Oil Job Resumés and Cover Letters
written by Captain Edwards.

He has worked in the oil industry since 1972, and has helped thousands of people find employment through his popular website.

As Captain Ron points out in the report: “I am amazed over and over again about people and their resumés. One of the hardest things to do in the job hunting process is to write an effective resumé. I have seen thousands of resumés of people from the bottom of the bottom to the top of the top, and 90 plus percent of them need some serious help!”

His special report packs enough inside information to give your resumé the cutting edge...

Part of the report deals with the nasty problem of Resumé Blasting

These are the websites we mentioned earlier that offer to send out your resumé to what is supposed to be a huge list of all the oil-related companies. They claim you’ll start getting offers and replies almost immediately.

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

But as Captain Edwards will make clear in the bonus report, almost all companies consider these emailed resumés as unwanted spam. You're job search is dead in the water before you've started. They trash your resumé without even reading it.

Professional resumés get interviews! You won't get a second chance to make a good first impression. You have to get everything right the first time, and this special report is designed to show you exactly how to do it.

We want to help you get started today, so you'll also receive our "Eye-Grabbing" Resume' Builder, designed to guide you step-by-step to a powerful resume' / CV, proven to get the attention of even the busiest personnel managers (more about that in a moment).  Used with Captain Edwards' advice, you'll have a winner.

The Offshore Employment Kit will also help answer some of the frequently asked questions about working in the offshore oil industry, for example...

Where are the Jobs?

By far the vast majority of Drilling Rig (and related) jobs in North America are around the USA Gulf Coast. Other active areas include Canada, Alaska, the North Sea, South America, West Africa, and the Middle East just to mention a few. If you are interested in a particular area of the world almost every major player in the industries is represented worldwide.

"Hotbeds" of activity for the offshore industries are of course Greater Houston, Texas... Lafayette, Louisiana... Morgan City, Louisiana... the Mississippi coastal ship building towns...Mobile, Alabama as well as most seaport cities along the Gulf Coast.

Don't be dismayed however if you do not live near the Gulf Coast of the U.S. Offshore work is structured so that you will work a certain amount of weeks ON with an equal amount of time OFF. Offshore workers live in almost every state of the U.S. and don't mind an interstate commute just once a month (even less) in order to live in their native areas. They enjoy the plentiful time off. (more on the work schedules in "the Kit")

Again, international readers will note that nearly all of the employers and contractors listed in our report have international offices even though their headquarters are located in Houston (the majority) or another oil and maritime centers worldwide.

What is the Work Schedule?

You can expect to be on your boat, rig or platform for periods of time followed by equal (usually) periods of time off. These are known as "hitches". They vary from employer to employer e.g.: 1 week ON and 1 week OFF; 2 weeks ON and 2 weeks OFF......and so on, up to 5 weeks on / off depending on the employer and location of the project.

Generally speaking, rigs in the Gulf of Mexico work 2 week/2 week schedules with those working further out in deeper water working 3 week/3 week hitches. Ocean going tugs, towboats and pipeline barges sometimes stay out until the project is finished which can be an indefinite time. The money you'll be making on these longer assignments will be tremendous, plus the fact that you won't be spending anything out of pocket!

Speaking of time at work this is a good time to speak of family life. It would be wise to prepare your loved ones for an extended time away from them. Telephones and e-mail are available on most rigs or boat (full-time on fixed platforms) but never count on it. Rigs in some remote areas of the world and those "under tow" may be out of touch for some time. Single people have it better in this respect. Even if you have a family, it can be worked out prior to your leaving. Be sure to emphasize to them the time off to be with them when you return.

We advise setting up automatic payment arrangements with you banking institution to take care of important bills such as mortgage payments, car payments, phone bills etc. Most employers are aware of this consideration and offer direct-deposit payroll. Be aware that your time "out there" is followed by lots of time off to pursue another business, hobby or just to enjoy life a bit. You'll come home to a nice amount of money in the bank if you play your cards right!

We are aware at this time of a LA employer who contracts to Seismic survey boats that work 5 weeks/5 weeks in
BRAZIL....crew change in Rio de Janiero and make port (go in to port) there every 5 days! Like we said earlier it varies. Check out all the leads in our "Offshore Employment Kit" and find the employer and schedule that's right for you.

Now for the burning question...How much will I make?

You'll have to purchase our report for complete answers. Please understand that we must speak here in generalizations as we have no control over wages and employers pay scales but as a rule of thumb there are few persons working offshore making less than $ 1000.00 per week worked even in the lowest of unskilled jobs. We
also know of management positions that pay that much per DAY! (most of these folks started as roustabouts-laborers)

The "oilfield" is known for fast promotions and advancement to those who show willingness to learn and to work conscientiously. Call around and get your best deal but remember....no matter how much you'll make per year, you'll actually earn it in 6 months (on the average) with the other 6 months OFF!

Read more on this subject in our "Offshore Employment Kit."

What is the Fastest / Easiest way to an Offshore Job?

We recommend that the Unskilled / First-timer / College students seek employment with one of the Catering contractors listed in our "Offshore Employment Kit". Other opportunities exist such as Deckhands, Painters, Laborers (roustabouts) Tank cleaners, Sandblasters and others mentioned in the report.

Skilled and experienced Tradesmen should check with all contractors and employer listed in our "Offshore Employment Kit" as salaries vary by location, demand and employer but expect to make considerably more than a "land job" either way and enjoy all of the other offshore benefits as well.

As we mentioned earlier, if you work hard and show initiative you won't be at the bottom for very long. But the lowest paid guy on the rigs gets the same food and flies in the same helicopter as the Project Manager under most circumstances, so don't be too proud to take an entry-level position. The benefits of working offshore are still great. Right now, the oilfield is in a long awaited upturn and hiring is beginning to be brisk!

A No Hassle, No Questions Asked 30-Day Money Back Guarantee

We strongly believe that you'll find the information in our kit, useful, time-saving and important. But we understand that you're concerned about buying something over the web.

So if you don't like your kit, send us an email and we'll refund your money. Simple as that.

No questions asked, no hard feelings and risk free to you.

But why all this for only $19?  Seems like a cheap price...

The answer is simple. We do the research and then many people buy it. We're not involved in finding individual jobs for individual people, so we don't have alot of overhead costs.

Our Kit is designed to help people help themselves in the process of finding a job in the oil industry, and the internet makes it inexpensive to produce.

If you were willing to spend a few hours every day for two or three weeks you can find the information you need on the web. But you have to figure out where to look and that takes too much time.

So in reality the most important thing our Kit offers is convenience. You've heard "time is money" and it's really true when you're looking for your next job.

So, $19 seems like a fair price for all the benefits. A higher price would just be getting greedy.

A word about our format...

You're ready to get started, which is why we sell the kit as a MS Word Document file that you can download immediately and print out if you like.

If you lose your kit, erase it, move to another country and can't find it, or whatever, just contact us and we'll see that you'll always have a copy. Guaranteed.
